Mystery Shop Exclusive: Are Sporting Goods Stores Ready to “Reel In” Father’s Day Shoppers?

With Father’s Day quickly approaching, sporting goods retailers are gearing up for the holiday. To understand if employees are prepared to help shoppers shop for, and purchase Father's Day gifts, Field Agent utilized our crowdsourcing capabilities to mystery shop a sample of Bass Pro Shops and Academy Sports locations nationwide.

Our Agents visited these locations under the guise of purchasing a fishing reel as a potential gift. Agents were instructed to go to the fishing section of the store and wait to be helped by an associate.

  • On average, 63% of Agents were helped within 5 minutes (at both Bass Pro Shops and Academy Sports).

  • At Academy Sports, 33% of employees recommended additional items to purchase along with the fishing reel, compared to 60% of Bass Pro Shops employees.

  • 60% of Academy Sports shoppers believe the employee displayed good product knowledge about the fishing category, compared to 100% of Bass Pro Shops employees.

  • Field-Agent-Sports-AcademyThe most common items that employees recommended to purchase with the fishing reel were baits & lures.

  • 33% of Agents that shopped Academy Sports said they were extremely likely to return to make a purchase; compared to 67% of Agents who would return to purchase an item at Bass Pro Shops.
